I hope you enjoyed your runs on Carsington Pastures I have seen it in all weathers through this summer. It was very wet at 7 a.m. this morning but I expect most of you ran in the dry. Apologies to early Yellow Course runners who had to be escorted through a herd of young Holstein heifers who were particularly fascinated by control 118. Thanks to John for controlling me and understanding my problems with contours. Thanks to all control collectors it would have been a 2^nd very long day without your assistance. Thanks especially to Mike for all the computing side of course planning, construction and erection of stiles, help in hanging controls on Saturday and boxes on Sunday prior to his day job in download.

A word of warning. BOF rules state that shorts are only permitted when an exemption is given by the controller. The event flyer and web site clearly stated that shorts were not permitted. Some competitors chose to ignore my advice risking disqualification in a round of Yvette Baker Trophy. People have been turned away at a major competition like the JK for failing to wear full body cover.

Orienteering at Carsington Pastures and Harborough Rocks

Carsington Pastures and Harborough Rocks, home of the hare and the skylark, may look tranquil and idyllic today but two centuries ago and earlier it was anything but. This area was hive of activity. The lead mining industry was in its heyday and the Pastures were one of the most exploited areas. The hills may have been described as looking like Hades, but one consequence of these activities is that the mine workings have transformed Carsington Pastures into one of the best open orienteering areas in the county.

Last Sunday that tranquillity was broken yet again, albeit temporarily, when Derwent Valley Orienteers staged a regional event on the area, the first of a series of such events in the coming season. Planned by world–class champion Liz Godfree, eight courses were on offer from the 1.3km white course for young children to the 10.2km brown course for experienced adults. The conditions were ideal for these cross-country time-trail races not too hot, not too cold with good visibility. Some extremely fast completion times were recorded. The Brown course was won by John Duckworth from Crich Carr in just over 56 minutes, a speed of around 5 min/km.

The event also hosted the first round Yvette Baker Cup a national, annual competition for junior orienteers. Derwent Valley Orienteers were just pipped by one point by local rivals Nottinghamshire.
